Each of the candidates in the upcoming Democratic Primary Election were given an opportunity to speak. Lt. Gov. Jari Askins gave the keynote address and the Rep. Guy Davis Memorial Scholarship was presented. Senator Jay Paul Gumm, who is seeking his third and final term in the Oklahoma Senate, gave the following remarks, which were rebroadcast on June 23 on KSEO 750 AM. - "Redemption" - Keynote Address - Bryan County Drug Court Graduation Ceremony
Senator Jay Paul Gumm presented the keynote address at the Bryan County Drug Court graduation ceremony, held Friday, June 18, 2010 at Durant’s First Christian Church. Drug Court is an intensive program designed to help drug offenders break free drug abuse, while keeping them out of prison. The program has proven to be far more effective than traditional punishment. The Bryan County Drug Court Program has graduated 105 offenders since its inception. Of that group, only five have re-offended. That recidivism rate is far less than traditional punishment, proving the programs save both lives and taxpayer dollars. The senator is a strong supporter of the program and his wife, Deena, serves on the Drug Court Team, which oversees the progress of participants.
