KOSU-FM Story on Disabled Veterans Sales Tax Exemption
The Senate Finance Committee this week passed legislation to crack down on retailers who aren’t giving the required sales tax break to 100% disabled veterans. House Bill 1545 would make it a misdemeanor against a retail manager, owner or corporate officer who refuses to give a sales tax break to veterans. Senator Jay Paul Gumm says an amendment added to the bill would go even further and publically reveal the offending store. Senator Gumm Explains Amendment to Strengthen Veterans Exemption Enforcement
State Sen. Jay Paul Gumm is continuing his efforts to ensure compliance with a tax break for disabled veterans originally passed in 2005. Despite widespread publicity about the law and a $500 administrative fine approved in 2006 for noncompliance, there are still retailers in the state refusing to honor the tax exemption. On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved amendatory language to House Bill 1545 that is stronger than a bill Gumm passed earlier in session. Senator Gumm Explains "Zone of Safety" Bill to Protect Children
The full Senate voted unanimously March 10 for a bill by Senator Jay Paul Gumm to increase the “zone of safety” around schools, childcare facilities, playgrounds and parks. Under current law, sex offenders are prohibited from loitering within 300 feet of those places where children congregate. Gumm’s bill – Senate Bill 2064 – would extend the zone of safety to being within 500 feet of the locations. Further, the bill would put new restrictions on sex offenders who enter the zone to pick up or drop off their own children. Senator Gumm Debates in Favor of Entrepreneur Ready Community Bill
The Oklahoma Senate approved a measure Monday, March 8, 2010 that supporters say would be a critical component of the state’s effort to support small businesses. Senate Bill 1723 would establish an “Entrepreneur Ready Community” program, helping communities find ways to encourage creative Oklahomans to take their ideas and turn them into goods and services. Senator Jay Paul Gumm of Durant wrote the measure and this is his closing debate in support. The measure passed, and is now awaiting consideration by the House of Representatives.
