State, City to Honor Businessman, Council Member
February 3rd, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY – The state of Oklahoma and city of Durant will honor Durant City Council Member Leon Sherrer with a special ceremony Friday, to which the public is invited.
The ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m., Friday. It will be in the parking lot of Sherrer’s Restaurant, located at 514 S. 9th Ave., the corner of South Ninth Avenue (Business Highway 69) and West Alabama Street in Durant.
In honor of Council Member Sherrer’s 90th birthday – which will be Saturday – the state and city will unveil a road sign identifying Business Highway 69 from the intersection of West Alabama south to the intersection of Waldron Road as the “Leon Sherrer Highway.”
Sherrer is the longtime owner of Sherrer’s Restaurant and he is the most senior serving city council member in the state of Oklahoma. In 2009, the Oklahoma Legislature enacted a state law that designated that stretch of highway as the “Leon Sherrer Highway.”
There will be a number of presentations to Sherrer. Speaking at the dedication will be Council Member Sherrer, Durant Mayor Jerry Tomlinson, City Manager Jim Dunegan, Senator Jay Paul Gumm, and Rep. John W. Carey. Several members of Sherrer’s family will be in attendance, and the public is welcome.
