Gumm Wins Unanimous Senate Vote to Honor Southern Oklahoma Soldiers
February 23rd, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY – Permanent memorials for three soldiers from Senate District 6 who paid the ultimate price in America’s War on Terror are another step closer to becoming a reality.
Senator Jay Paul Gumm is principal author of Senate Bill 1713, naming portions of local roadways in honor of Corporal Michael Eyre Thompson, Sergeant Clint E. Williams and Chief Warrant Officer Brady Rudolf. The measure won unanimous approval by the full Senate on Tuesday.
“These three native sons paid the ultimate price defending their fellow citizens and their nation in the War on Terror,” Gumm said. “I consider it a privilege to author legislation helping us all to pay tribute to their service and ensuring that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Upon Gumm’s motion, the Senate made a change to the bill at the request on one of the families. In the current version of SB 1713, a section of U.S Highway 70, beginning at the Marshall/Bryan county line to the Intersection of U.S. Highway 377 in Madill would be designated as the “Corporal Michael Eyre Thompson memorial Highway.”
U.S. Highway 377 from Madill south to the Oklahoma State line would be designated as the “Sergeant Clint E. Williams Memorial Highway.”
U.S. Highway 70 from the Bryan/Marshall county line east to the City of Durant limits would be designated as the “Chief Warrant Officer Brady Rudolf Memorial Highway.”
SB 1713 now moves to the House of Representatives, where Rep. Samson Buck, who represents Marshall County, is the sponsor.
