The Durant Independent School District broke ground on a new Durant High School on Thursday, July 30, 2009. Senator Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant and a graduate of Durant Schools, was on hand for the event. He was interviewed by KTEN Reporter Deeda Payton about the importance of the new facility. KXII-TV Channel 12 Story on New Law Honoring Fallen Soldiers

On KXII's First News at 10 on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, anchor Maureen Kane reported on a new Oklahoma state law requiring the governor to order flags to fly at half staff on the day an Oklahoma soldier lost in the War on Terror is laid to rest. The bill was written by Senator Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant, after he was sent an email by Sgt. Todd Anderson of Tishomingo while the young soldier was stationed in Iraq. Anderson was a Senate Page for Gumm in 2003. The bill was carried in the House of Representatives by Rep. Paul Roan, D-Tishomingo.
