On KXII's First News at 10 on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, anchor Maureen Kane reported on a new Oklahoma state law requiring the governor to order flags to fly at half staff on the day an Oklahoma soldier lost in the War on Terror is laid to rest. The bill was written by Senator Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant, after he was sent an email by Sgt. Todd Anderson of Tishomingo while the young soldier was stationed in Iraq. Anderson was a Senate Page for Gumm in 2003. The bill was carried in the House of Representatives by Rep. Paul Roan, D-Tishomingo.

KXII's First News aired this story on May 26, 2009 about a proposal by Senator Jay Paul Gumm, D-Durant, to prohibit sex offenders from driving ice cream vending trucks in our neighborhoods. The measure was spurred by several high-profile cases in other states in which child predators used ice cream trucks as a means to attract potential victims. The measure was eventually signed into law by Gov. Brad Henry and will take effect July 1, 2009. Rashi Vats reports for KXII.

This is an investigative report by KWTV News 9 into the true cost of requring health insurance to cover diagnosis and treatment of autism in children. One of the biggest battles at the State Capitol in 2008, 2009 and likely beyond is the fight to require health insurance to cover the disorder. At issue is estimates as to the cost. Supporters of "Nick's Law" - including Senator Jay Paul Gumm - say the cost is minimal. Opponents, including the Republican leadership of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, produced a study that shows much higher costs. Amy Lester of News9 looks at the two studies and the experience in other states. The story aired on the Wednesday, May 20, 2009 10 p.m. newscast.
